Chatuchak Weekend Market, affectionately known as JJ Market, is a shopping phenomenon that sprawls across 35 acres with over 15,000 stalls and 200,000 visitors every weekend. From vintage clothing and handmade ceramics to exotic plants and antique furniture, Chatuchak offers virtually everything under the Bangkok sun and remains one of the city's most thrilling experiences. ## Layout and Sections The market is divided into 27 numbered sections, each loosely dedicated to specific goods. Sections 2-4 focus on vintage and secondhand items. Sections 7-8 feature antiques and collectibles. Sections 5-6 and 22-26 offer clothing and accessories. Sections 17-19 have home décor and ceramics. Section 10 is a favorite for plants and gardening. Grab a free map at the information kiosk near Gate 1 — without one, you will inevitably get lost, which is actually part of the fun. ## Food and Drink Some of Bangkok's best street food can be found here. Look for coconut ice cream served in a coconut shell, pad thai cooked to order in giant woks, mango sticky rice, and grilled seafood skewers. The Viva 8 section along the outer ring road has air-conditioned cafés perfect for a cool-down break. Craft beer stalls dot the market, offering cold local brews that are welcome relief from the heat. ## Shopping Tips Bargaining is expected at most stalls — start at about 60-70% of the asking price and negotiate from there. Bring cash, as many vendors do not accept cards. Arrive early for the best selection or late afternoon when sellers are more willing to offer discounts. Bring a reusable bag and wear comfortable shoes — you will walk several kilometers. ## Best Time to Visit Saturday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 is ideal, as many stalls are open and crowds are still manageable. Sunday tends to be more packed. Some sections open Friday evenings from 18:00. Avoid the midday heat between 12:00 and 14:00 when the lack of air conditioning becomes punishing. ## How to Get There Take the BTS to Mo Chit station or the MRT to Chatuchak Park or Kamphaeng Phet station (the most convenient, with an exit directly into the market). Taxis and ride-hailing apps work but traffic is heavy on weekends. ## Nearby Attractions Or Tor Kor Market, one of the world's best fresh markets, is right next door. Chatuchak Park and Rot Fai Park are within walking distance for a post-shopping stroll. The Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is inside Rot Fai Park.
