Day Trips from Bangkok

Escape the city — ancient ruins, waterfalls, floating markets, and beaches within a few hours.

Day Trips from Bangkok

Bangkok is one of Southeast Asia's great launching pads. Within just a few hours of the capital, you'll find ancient ruins that rival Angkor Wat, jungle-clad national parks teeming with wildlife, floating markets where vendors paddle wooden boats laden with tropical fruit, and white-sand beaches lapped by the warm Gulf of Thailand. Whether you've been living in Bangkok for years or are visiting for the first time, the sheer variety of day-trip destinations means there's always somewhere new to explore.

The destinations in this guide fall into several distance ranges. The closest trips — under an hour from central Bangkok — include places like the Ancient City (Muang Boran), a massive open-air museum in Samut Prakan, and the Maeklong Railway Market where trains literally squeeze through a working produce market. At the one-to-two-hour range, you'll find the legendary floating markets of Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa, the latter being especially charming for its evening firefly boat tours. Push out to two or three hours, and you reach Ayutthaya, the magnificent former capital whose crumbling prangs and headless Buddha statues are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the far end, three to four hours from Bangkok, lies Kanchanaburi with its Bridge over the River Kwai and the hauntingly beautiful Erawan National Park.

Your transport choice makes a big difference. For Ayutthaya and nearby destinations along the railway, the State Railway of Thailand offers dirt-cheap fares — as low as 20 baht for a third-class seat — though the trains run slowly and don't always keep to schedule. Minivans depart from Victory Monument and the Southern Bus Terminal to most popular destinations and are faster than trains, but they can feel cramped and drivers sometimes speed. For maximum comfort and flexibility, a private car with driver through Grab or a local tour company typically costs 1,500 to 3,000 baht for a full day, which is remarkably good value when split between two or three travelers. For Kanchanaburi and Khao Yai, a private vehicle is almost essential unless you join an organized tour.

Different trips suit different travelers. History buffs should prioritize Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi, both rich with stories from Thailand's past and the Second World War. Nature lovers will be drawn to Khao Yai National Park, home to wild elephants and hornbills, and to Erawan's seven-tiered waterfall where you can swim in emerald pools. Families with young children tend to enjoy the Ancient City and Safari World, both of which are manageable in half a day. If you want a beach escape without flying, Koh Samet and Hua Hin are both reachable in under four hours, though Koh Samet requires a short ferry crossing. Foodies should not miss Amphawa's weekend evening market, where grilled seafood is served straight from the canal-side stalls.

A few practical tips: leave Bangkok early to beat the traffic, ideally before 7 AM. Weekdays are far less crowded at every destination. During the rainy season (June through October), waterfalls are at their most spectacular but trails can be slippery, so pack water shoes. Always carry sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water — temperatures outside Bangkok's air-conditioned bubble can feel even more intense. Below you'll find our curated selection of the best day trips, complete with travel times, transport options, and highlights for each destination.
