International schools, Thai language courses, universities & ED visas — everything you need for education in Bangkok
Bangkok's Education Landscape
Bangkok is home to one of the largest concentrations of international schools in the world, with over 180 institutions serving the city's substantial expat community and increasingly globally minded Thai families. The range of curricula is extraordinary: British-system schools following the IGCSE and A-Level pathway (Shrewsbury, Harrow, Bangkok Patana), American-curriculum schools offering AP and SAT preparation (International School Bangkok, NIST), IB World Schools delivering the full International Baccalaureate programme (Ruamrudee, KIS), and bilingual Thai-English schools that blend both traditions. This diversity means families can find educational continuity regardless of where they've come from or where they're headed next.
Costs range enormously. Top-tier international schools like Shrewsbury and Harrow charge 700,000–1,000,000 baht per year for senior students, with additional fees for registration (often 100,000–200,000 baht, non-refundable), uniforms, bus transport, and extracurricular activities. Mid-range international schools run 300,000–600,000 baht annually. Bilingual schools offer a more affordable path at 150,000–350,000 baht. Thai private schools cost 30,000–150,000 baht, while Thai public schools are effectively free for Thai nationals. Most international schools have waitlists — particularly the established British schools — so applying 6–12 months in advance is strongly recommended. The Thai public school system, while underfunded compared to international options, has pockets of excellence, and the government's push toward English-language instruction in select schools is creating interesting new options.
Beyond K-12 education, Bangkok hosts a robust university scene with prestigious institutions like Chulalongkorn University, Thammasat University, and Mahidol University offering international programmes in English. For adults, the city is a hub for Thai language learning — schools like Union Language, AUA, and Duke Language offer structured courses from beginner to advanced, with programmes that qualify for the ED (Education) visa, allowing stays of up to one year. Many language schools charge 30,000–50,000 baht for a full year of classes including visa support. Whether you're enrolling a child in a world-class IB programme, pursuing a master's degree in tropical medicine at Mahidol, or simply learning enough Thai to bargain at Chatuchak Market, Bangkok's education ecosystem has an option for you.
