    Bangkok in July

Weather, festivals, what to pack and what to skip in July

    7 min readUpdated 2026-06

July is the heart of rainy season — and quite a good time to be in Bangkok. The afternoon thunderstorm pattern is now established, the city looks its lushest, and crowds are at the year's low ebb. Domestic Thai schools are back in session so even the family-attractions like SEA Life and KidZania are quiet on weekdays. The big-ticket religious event of the month is Asalha Bucha and Khao Phansa (Buddhist Lent start), which together comprise a long weekend and a 24-hour alcohol ban.

International visitors increase late in July as European summer holidays kick in, but volumes are nowhere near the November–February peak. Hotel rates are at low-season floors. For business travellers, July is genuinely the best month: meetings book easily, taxis are uncongested, and the city operates at a calm tempo. The catch is that rain is daily and sometimes biblical — pack accordingly, and have a flexible mindset.

    Asalha Bucha Day

Full moon of the 8th lunar month (varies)

Buddhist holiday commemorating Buddha's first sermon. Alcohol ban 24h. Candle processions at major temples.

    Khao Phansa (Buddhist Lent begins)

    Day after Asalha Bucha

Three-month Buddhist Lent begins. Monks retreat to monasteries. Public holiday; many drink-free for the full 3 months.

    Candle Festival celebrations

    Around Khao Phansa

Beautiful candle parades to mark Buddhist Lent — largest in Ubon Ratchathani, but Wat Pho and Wat Suthat in Bangkok also host wonderful processions.

    HM the King's Birthday

    28 July

Public holiday. Government buildings light up; royal portraits everywhere. Wear yellow on the day as gesture of respect.

    Best for

Business travellers, photographers, budget travellers wanting maximum value, families with young kids since attractions are quiet.

    Not ideal for

Andaman beach-goers, anyone with rigid weather expectations.
