Island Escapes from Bangkok

One of Bangkok's greatest advantages as a base is its proximity to two entirely different coastlines. To the east and south lies the Gulf of Thailand, home to islands like Koh Samet (3 hours by car and ferry), Koh Chang (5 hours), and the famous trio of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao (reachable by a 1-hour flight to Surat Thani plus ferry, or an overnight sleeper bus). To the west and south, the Andaman Sea offers the dramatic limestone karsts and crystal-clear waters of Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, and the Similan Islands. Each coast has its own personality, its own best season, and its own price range — understanding these differences is the key to planning the right island escape.

Seasonality is crucial when choosing your destination. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Samet) is best from January through September, with the worst weather in October and November when monsoon rains hit the eastern seaboard. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lipe, Similan Islands) has opposite timing — peak season runs from November through April, while the southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas from May through October, closing the Similan and Surin island national parks entirely. This means Bangkok residents can theoretically enjoy island life year-round by simply switching coasts with the seasons.

Budget planning varies dramatically between islands. Koh Samet and Koh Lan (just off Pattaya, reachable in 2 hours) are the most affordable weekend options, with budget bungalows starting at 500-800 THB per night. Koh Samui sits at the premium end with luxury resorts, international restaurants, and direct flights from Bangkok on Bangkok Airways (the only airline serving the route, hence higher fares around 3,000-6,000 THB one way). For the best value, Koh Lanta and Koh Chang offer a sweet spot of beautiful beaches, excellent seafood, and mid-range accommodation at 1,000-2,500 THB per night. Booking domestic flights on AirAsia, Nok Air, or Thai Lion Air two to three weeks in advance typically yields fares of 1,000-2,000 THB to southern hubs like Surat Thani, Krabi, or Trang, making even distant islands surprisingly accessible for a long weekend from Bangkok.
