Staying Healthy in the Tropics

Heat, food safety, and mosquitoes.

Living in or visiting tropical Bangkok requires adjustments to your health routines. The combination of intense heat, unfamiliar bacteria, mosquito-borne diseases, and air pollution creates health challenges that are manageable with knowledge and preparation. ## Dealing with the Heat Bangkok's average temperature hovers around 28-35 degrees Celsius year-round, with the hot season pushing to 38-40 degrees. Drink 3-4 liters of water daily. Carry a water bottle everywhere. Add electrolytes on hot days. Wear lightweight breathable clothing. Take breaks in air-conditioned spaces during 11 AM to 3 PM. ## Food Safety Bangkok street food is remarkably safe. During your first week, stick to well-cooked food from busy stalls. Ice in drinks at restaurants is factory-made and safe. If you get food poisoning, most cases resolve within 24-48 hours with ORS and rest. ## Mosquito-Borne Diseases Dengue fever is the primary risk from Aedes mosquitoes that bite during daytime. Apply repellent with DEET, wear long sleeves at dawn and dusk, sleep with air conditioning. If you develop sudden high fever with severe headache, see a doctor immediately. ## Air Pollution Bangkok air quality deteriorates December to March. Check IQAir app daily. When AQI exceeds 100, wear N95 masks outdoors, run air purifiers indoors, avoid outdoor exercise. ## Common Issues - Sunburn: Wear SPF 50+ daily - Fungal infections: Keep skin dry, use antifungal powder - Dehydration: Dark urine means drink more water ## Pharmacy Thai pharmacies sell most medications without prescription. Boots and Watsons are everywhere. Prices very low — antibiotics 50-100 baht. With basic precautions, staying healthy in Bangkok is straightforward.
