Best Hospitals for Foreigners

World-class medical care.

Bangkok is a global hub for medical tourism, and for good reason. The city's top hospitals offer care that rivals or exceeds the best facilities in the West, with shorter wait times, lower costs, and a level of patient service that often feels more like a luxury hotel than a hospital. For expats and visitors, understanding the hospital landscape ensures you get the right care at the right price when you need it. ## The Top Tier: International Hospitals ### Bumrungrad International Hospital Bumrungrad is the gold standard for international healthcare in Thailand. Located on Sukhumvit Soi 3, this JCI-accredited hospital treats over 1.1 million patients annually from 190 countries. The facility looks and feels like a five-star hotel, with translators available in over 30 languages, dedicated international patient coordinators, and specialty clinics covering every medical field. What to expect: General consultation fees run 800-2,000 baht depending on the specialist. An MRI costs around 8,000-15,000 baht (compared to $1,000-3,000+ in the US). The emergency room operates 24/7 with minimal wait times. The downside is that Bumrungrad is the most expensive hospital in Bangkok, and prices have increased significantly in recent years. ### BNH Hospital BNH on Convent Road in Silom has been operating since 1898, making it one of Bangkok's oldest hospitals. It is particularly popular with the European and Japanese expat communities. The facility is smaller and more intimate than Bumrungrad, with a strong reputation in orthopedics, obstetrics, and general medicine. Consultation fees are slightly lower than Bumrungrad, typically 700-1,500 baht. ### Samitivej Hospital Samitivej operates several branches, with Samitivej Sukhumvit on Soi 49 being the most popular among expats. Their pediatric and obstetric departments are highly regarded, making it the go-to hospital for expat families. The Japanese-speaking department at Samitivej Sukhumvit reflects the large Japanese community in the area. ### Bangkok Hospital Bangkok Hospital on Soi Soonvijai is another JCI-accredited facility with comprehensive services. Their heart center and neuroscience center are particularly strong. The campus is large and can feel overwhelming, but the medical quality is excellent. ## The Value Tier: Excellent Care, Lower Prices ### Phyathai Hospital With multiple locations across Bangkok, Phyathai offers very good care at significantly lower prices than the international hospitals. Phyathai 2 on Phaholyothin Road is popular with expats for routine care. Consultations run 300-800 baht, and procedures are typically 30-50% cheaper than Bumrungrad. ### Paolo Hospital Paolo has branches in Phaholyothin and Kaset with a focus on affordable quality care. Less English-speaking staff than the international hospitals, but medical competence is high. This is where many long-term expats go for routine care to manage costs. ### Praram 9 Hospital Excellent for specialist care at reasonable prices. Their dermatology and ENT departments have strong reputations. Located on Rama 9 Road near MRT Phra Ram 9. ## Emergency Care In a genuine emergency, call 1669 for an ambulance or go directly to the nearest hospital. Every hospital listed above has a 24-hour emergency room. However, response times for ambulances in Bangkok can be slow due to traffic. In critical situations, a Grab or taxi to the nearest hospital may actually be faster. For non-life-threatening emergencies, international hospitals' emergency rooms are efficient but expensive. A basic ER visit at Bumrungrad with consultation, basic tests, and medication can easily run 5,000-15,000 baht. Phyathai or Paolo ERs provide the same medical care for roughly half the cost. ## Walk-In Clinics and Pharmacies For minor issues like colds, stomach problems, or minor injuries, walk-in clinics are everywhere in Bangkok and cost 200-500 baht per visit including medication. Many medications that require prescriptions in Western countries are available over the counter at Thai pharmacies, including antibiotics, pain medications, and some prescription-strength treatments. Boots, Watsons, and independent pharmacies all employ licensed pharmacists who can advise on appropriate treatments. ## Choosing the Right Hospital - For emergencies: Go to the nearest hospital on this list - For routine checkups: Phyathai or Paolo offer the best value - For specialist care: Bumrungrad or Bangkok Hospital have the widest range of specialists - For families with children: Samitivej Sukhumvit - For obstetrics: BNH or Samitivej - For surgery: Bumrungrad (most advanced facilities) or Bangkok Hospital ## Practical Tips 1. Always bring your passport and insurance card 2. Ask for an itemized bill and question any charges you do not understand 3. Many hospitals offer health checkup packages that provide comprehensive screening at bundled prices (5,000-30,000 baht depending on scope) 4. If you have insurance, confirm the hospital is in your network before non-emergency visits 5. Hospital apps (Bumrungrad, Samitivej) allow online appointment booking and queue tracking Bangkok's healthcare infrastructure is genuinely world-class. Whether you need a routine checkup or complex surgery, the quality of care available is one of the strongest arguments for choosing Bangkok as your home.
