    BTS & MRT Complete Guide

    Master Bangkok's rail network.

Bangkok's rail network is the backbone of efficient travel in the city. The BTS Skytrain and MRT subway together cover most of the areas tourists and expats frequent, running above and below the notorious traffic that clogs the streets. Understanding the system, its payment options, and its quirks will save you hours of sitting in traffic and significant money over taxis and ride-hailing. This is the complete guide to Bangkok's rail network in 2026.

    Understanding the Lines

    • Sukhumvit Line (Light Green): Runs from Khu Khot in the north through Chatuchak, Mo Chit, Siam, Asok, Thonglor, On Nut, and continuing to Kheha in Samut Prakan. This is the most heavily used line, connecting major expat, shopping, and nightlife areas
    • Silom Line (Dark Green): Runs from National Stadium through Siam, Sala Daeng, Saphan Taksin (for river boats), and to Bang Wa. Connects the shopping district to the business district
    • Blue Line: A loop connecting Hua Lamphong (main train station area), Silom, Sukhumvit (connecting to BTS Asok), Chatuchak, and continuing through Tao Poon to Tha Phra and back. Covers areas the BTS misses, particularly Chinatown (Wat Mangkon station) and the Ratchadaphisek entertainment district
    • Yellow Line: Newer monorail connecting Lat Phrao to Samrong, serving the eastern suburbs
    • Pink Line: Newest monorail running from Nonthaburi to Min Buri in the northern suburbs

    Fares and Payment

BTS single journey fares range from 16-62 baht depending on distance. MRT fares run 17-70 baht. Payment options:

Rabbit Card (BTS): A reloadable stored-value card that eliminates queuing at ticket machines. Available at any BTS station for 200 baht (100 baht card fee + 100 baht credit). Tap in and out at the gates. Also accepted at some convenience stores and restaurants.

MRT Stored Value Card: Separate from the Rabbit Card. Available at MRT stations for 230 baht (130 baht deposit + 100 baht credit). Refundable deposit when you return the card.

Single Journey Tokens: Available from ticket machines at every station. Insert coins or bills, select your destination, and receive a plastic token. Tap to enter, insert to exit.

Open Loop EMV: Many stations now accept contactless credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) directly at the gates. This is the most convenient option for tourists.

Unfortunately, there is still no single card that works across both BTS and MRT systems, which is a frequent complaint from residents.

    Operating Hours and Frequency

Both BTS and MRT operate from approximately 5:15 AM to midnight. During peak hours (7-9 AM, 5-7 PM), trains arrive every 3-5 minutes. Off-peak frequency is 5-8 minutes. Late evening trains run every 8-12 minutes.

The last trains vary by station and direction, so check the schedule displays at platforms if you are cutting it close to midnight.

    Key Interchange Stations

    • Siam: BTS Sukhumvit and Silom lines interchange (cross-platform, very easy)
    • Asok/Sukhumvit: BTS Asok connects to MRT Sukhumvit (short underground walk)
    • Sala Daeng/Silom: BTS Sala Daeng connects to MRT Silom (short walk)
    • Mo Chit/Chatuchak Park: BTS Mo Chit connects to MRT Chatuchak Park (5-minute walk)
    • Ha Yaek Lat Phrao: MRT Blue Line connects to Yellow Line monorail

    Tips for a Smooth Ride

    1. 1.Stand on the left of escalators, walk on the right. This is generally respected
    2. 2.Let passengers exit before boarding. Thai commuters are generally polite about this
    3. 3.Priority seats at the end of each car are for monks, elderly, pregnant women, and disabled passengers. Give them up without being asked
    4. 4.Air conditioning can be aggressive. Carry a light layer if you are sensitive to cold
    5. 5.Food and drinks are prohibited on the MRT. The BTS is more lenient but avoid messy items
    6. 6.Rush hour trains (especially Asok to Siam, 8-9 AM) can be extremely crowded. Consider traveling one stop past your destination and backtracking for a seat
    7. 7.The BTS Rabbit Card saves significant time versus queuing for tokens, especially during busy periods

    Useful Station-to-Destination Guide

    • Grand Palace/Wat Pho: MRT Sanam Chai (newest and most convenient) or BTS Saphan Taksin + river boat
    • Chatuchak Market: BTS Mo Chit or MRT Chatuchak Park
    • Chinatown: MRT Wat Mangkon
    • Khao San Road: MRT Sam Yot + short taxi/walk
    • Siam shopping district: BTS Siam or National Stadium
    • Thonglor/Ekkamai nightlife: BTS Thong Lo or Ekkamai

Bangkok's rail network is not perfect, but it is fast, clean, affordable, and air-conditioned. Making it your primary transport method is the smartest decision you can make for navigating the city efficiently.
