    Airport Transfer Guide

Every option from BKK and DMK.

Getting from the airport to your Bangkok accommodation is the first logistical challenge of any trip, and choosing the right transfer option can set the tone for your entire visit. Bangkok has two international airports, each with different transport options, price points, and levels of convenience. This guide covers every option so you can make the best choice for your situation.

    Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

Suvarnabhumi handles the majority of international flights and is located about 30 km east of central Bangkok.

    Airport Rail Link (ARL)

The Airport Rail Link is the fastest and most reliable option for reaching central Bangkok. The City Line runs from the airport basement to Phaya Thai station (connecting to BTS) with 6 stops in between. Key details:

    • Fare: 15-45 baht depending on destination (45 baht to Phaya Thai, the final stop)
    • Travel time: 30 minutes to Phaya Thai
    • Operating hours: 5:30 AM to midnight
    • Frequency: every 10-15 minutes
    • Connect to BTS at Phaya Thai station, or to MRT at Makkasan station

The ARL is clean, air-conditioned, and has luggage space. It is the best option for solo travelers and couples heading to Sukhumvit, Silom, or Siam areas. From Phaya Thai, a short BTS ride or Grab takes you to most central locations.

    Metered Taxi

Official metered taxis are available from Level 1 of the terminal. Join the queue, get a numbered ticket, and you will be assigned a taxi. Important details:

    • Meter fare to central Bangkok: 250-400 baht (depending on traffic and destination)
    • Airport surcharge: 50 baht (added to meter fare)
    • Expressway tolls: 25-75 baht (paid by passenger, in addition to fare)
    • Total cost: typically 350-500 baht to Sukhumvit or Silom
    • Travel time: 30-90 minutes depending on traffic

Always insist on the meter. If a driver refuses or quotes a flat rate, decline and take the next taxi. The queue moves fast. Avoid the unofficial taxi touts inside the terminal who charge 1,000-2,000 baht for the same trip.

    Grab

Grab pickup at Suvarnabhumi has designated waiting areas on Level 2 (arrivals). Fares are typically 300-500 baht to central Bangkok, sometimes higher during surge. The advantage is a fixed price shown before booking, air-conditioned vehicle, and no negotiation required. The disadvantage is wait times can be longer than the taxi queue, especially during peak hours.

    Airport Limousine

For premium comfort, AOT Limousine operates from the arrivals hall with fixed-price transfers starting at 1,200 baht for a sedan to central Bangkok, up to 2,500 baht for a luxury vehicle. Hotel cars arranged through your accommodation typically cost 1,500-3,000 baht but offer door-to-door service with a meet-and-greet in the terminal.

    Airport Bus

BMTA public buses run several routes from Suvarnabhumi to various parts of Bangkok. Route S1 goes to Khao San Road for 60 baht. These are the cheapest option but the slowest and least convenient with luggage.

    Don Mueang Airport (DMK)

Don Mueang handles domestic flights and many budget international carriers (AirAsia, Nok Air, Lion Air). It is located about 24 km north of central Bangkok.

    SRT Red Line

The SRT Red Line commuter rail connects Don Mueang to Bang Sue Grand Station, Bangkok's new central rail hub. From Bang Sue, connect to the MRT Blue Line. Fare is 12-42 baht, and the journey takes about 30 minutes. This is now the best public transport option from Don Mueang.

    Metered Taxi

Same system as Suvarnabhumi. Queue at the taxi stand, insist on the meter. Fares to central Bangkok run 200-400 baht plus expressway tolls. No airport surcharge at Don Mueang.

    Grab

Grab works from Don Mueang with pickup points outside the terminal. Similar pricing to Suvarnabhumi routes.

    A1 and A2 Buses

Bus A1 runs from Don Mueang to BTS Mo Chit and MRT Chatuchak Park for 30 baht. This is an excellent budget option that connects you to the entire rail network in about 30-45 minutes. Buses run every 10-20 minutes from 7 AM to midnight.

    Between the Two Airports

If you need to transfer between BKK and DMK, a free shuttle bus operates between the two airports. Journey time is 50-90 minutes depending on traffic. Show your boarding pass or flight itinerary to board. Alternatively, a Grab between airports costs 300-500 baht.

    Recommendations by Situation

    • Budget solo traveler: ARL (from BKK) or A1 Bus (from DMK) to rail network
    • Couple/small group: Metered taxi offers the best value per person
    • Family with kids and luggage: Hotel car or Grab for door-to-door convenience
    • Arriving after midnight: Taxi or Grab are your only options; rail and buses stop running
    • Business traveler: AOT Limousine or hotel car for reliability

Getting from the airport to your hotel does not need to be stressful or expensive. Choose the option that matches your budget, group size, and arrival time, and you will be settled into Bangkok in no time.
