The Art of Bargaining
Tips from a local.
Bargaining is integral to Bangkok market shopping culture.
Where to Bargain
Markets (Chatuchak, Pratunam), souvenir shops, MBK, Platinum, tuk-tuks.
Where NOT to Bargain
Department stores, supermarkets, restaurants, BTS/MRT, food stalls.
The Art
Step 1: Know Prices T-shirts 100-200 baht, elephant pants 100-150 baht, silk scarves 200-500 baht.
Step 2: Start at 50-60% If they say 500, offer 250-300.
Step 3: Be Friendly Smile, joke, use Thai phrases (paeng pai, lot noi dai mai).
Step 4: Walk Away If no deal, politely leave. They may call you back.
Step 5: Know When to Stop Accept good value graciously. Haggling over 20 baht is poor form.
Advanced Tips

- Shop later when vendors want to close sales
