Victory Monument
Major transportation hub and military monument, surrounded by street food stalls.
Victory Monument is a towering obelisk surrounded by a massive traffic roundabout that serves as one of Bangkok's most important transportation hubs and a recognizable city landmark. Built in 1941 to commemorate Thailand's victory in a brief border conflict with French Indochina, the monument has evolved from a military memorial into a vibrant urban center known equally for its transit connections and its outstanding street food scene. ## History and Design The 50-meter-tall obelisk was erected under the government of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram to celebrate the Franco-Thai War of 1940-1941, in which Thailand reclaimed territories in Laos and Cambodia. Five bronze statues at the base represent the army, navy, air force, police, and civilian defenders. The surrounding area was developed as a modern urban district, and the monument became a natural hub as bus routes and later the BTS Skytrain converged here. ## Street Food and Dining The streets surrounding Victory Monument are famous for some of Bangkok's best and most affordable street food. Boat noodles (kuay tiaw ruea) are the signature dish — tiny bowls of rich, intensely flavored noodle soup served for just 15-20 baht each. The narrow sois (lanes) behind the monument are packed with food stalls, small restaurants, and Thai dessert shops. The area near Soi Rangnam is particularly popular for dinner. ## Transportation Hub Victory Monument is a major transit interchange. BTS Victory Monument station connects to the Skytrain network. Numerous bus routes serve the roundabout. Mini-vans to destinations outside Bangkok (including Hua Hin, Pattaya, and Ayutthaya) depart from the area, though many services have moved to the new Northern Bus Terminal. The area is always bustling with commuters. ## Best Time to Visit Lunchtime from 11:00 to 13:00 is peak street food time with the fullest selection. Evening from 17:00 to 20:00 offers a second wave of food stalls. The monument itself can be viewed at any time, though it is beautifully lit at night. ## How to Get There BTS Victory Monument station provides direct access to the roundabout. Multiple exits lead to different sides of the circle. ## Nearby Attractions Soi Rangnam has excellent dining and nightlife options. King Mongkut's Institute of Technology and Phaya Thai Palace are nearby. The area connects easily via BTS to Siam and Chatuchak. Baiyoke Tower II with its observation deck is a short taxi ride away.
