Rot Fai Park (officially Wachirabenchathat Park) is a sprawling 375-rai (about 148-acre) urban park adjacent to Chatuchak Park that offers one of Bangkok's best escapes into nature. Named after its history as the site of the State Railway of Thailand's golf course, the park features expansive lawns, a large lake, cycling paths, a butterfly garden, and mature trees that create a genuine sense of being far from the city. ## Park Features The park's central lake is the focal point, with paddle boats available for rent and a picturesque wooden bridge. Wide paved paths circle the park, popular with joggers, cyclists, and roller skaters. The lawns are perfect for picnics — Thai families spread mats and share food on evenings and weekends. An outdoor amphitheater hosts occasional events and performances. ## Butterfly Garden and Insectarium The Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium within the park is a wonderful attraction, especially for families. The enclosed garden houses hundreds of butterflies from various Thai species flying freely among flowering plants. The adjacent insectarium displays fascinating specimens and educational exhibits about Thai insects. Both are free to enter. ## Cycling Rot Fai Park is one of Bangkok's best cycling destinations, with dedicated bike paths winding through shaded areas. Bicycles can be rented at stations near the park entrances for modest hourly rates. The flat terrain and car-free environment make it accessible for all fitness levels. ## Best Time to Visit Late afternoon from 16:00 to 18:00 when the heat breaks and the park fills with locals exercising, picnicking, and socializing. Weekend mornings from 7:00 to 10:00 offer a peaceful atmosphere with joggers and cyclists. The butterfly garden is best visited in the morning when butterflies are most active. ## How to Get There MRT Chatuchak Park station or BTS Mo Chit station, then walk through Chatuchak Park to reach Rot Fai Park. MRT Kamphaeng Phet station is also accessible. The park connects seamlessly with Chatuchak Park and Queen Sirikit Park. ## Nearby Attractions Chatuchak Weekend Market is immediately adjacent. Or Tor Kor Market is next door. Queen Sirikit Park forms a continuous green space with Rot Fai and Chatuchak parks. MOCA Bangkok is a short taxi ride north.
