Erawan Museum
Striking three-headed elephant structure housing antiquities across three themed floors.
The Erawan Museum is one of Bangkok's most visually spectacular attractions, dominated by a colossal three-headed elephant sculpture standing 29 meters tall and weighing 250 tons. Built by the late Lek Viriyaphant (who also created the Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya and Ancient City nearby), the museum houses a stunning collection of antiquities displayed across three themed floors inside and beneath the elephant structure. ## The Three-Headed Elephant The massive bronze and copper elephant sculpture is a representation of Erawan, the three-headed elephant from Hindu mythology that serves as the mount of the god Indra. The sheer scale is breathtaking — each head weighs 100 tons, and the entire structure stands atop a pink pedestal building. The elephant was assembled from over 100 separate pieces and took years to construct. ## Three Levels The museum is organized into three themed levels symbolizing the Buddhist concept of the three worlds. The underground level represents the underworld (Naga) with aquatic-themed displays and antique Chinese ceramics. The middle level (inside the pedestal) represents the human world, featuring European stained glass, Thai antiques, and stunning spiral staircases. The upper level (inside the elephant's belly) represents heaven, displaying sacred Buddhist artifacts, Benjarong porcelain, and gilt Buddha images in a breathtaking pink-lit interior. ## Gardens The surrounding gardens are beautiful and well-maintained, featuring tropical landscaping, ponds, traditional Thai pavilions, and sculpture installations. The gardens alone are worth exploring and provide excellent photography vantage points of the elephant from various angles. ## Best Time to Visit Morning from 9:00 to 11:00 for the best light and smallest crowds. The museum can be visited in about one to two hours. Combine with a visit to nearby Ancient City (Muang Boran) for a full day trip. ## How to Get There BTS Pu Chao station or BTS Chang Erawan station, then a short taxi ride. The museum is on Sukhumvit Road in Samut Prakan, about 30 minutes south of central Bangkok by BTS and taxi. ## Nearby Attractions Ancient City (Muang Boran), an enormous outdoor museum recreating Thai historical structures, is about 10 minutes further south. Bang Krachao Green Lung is accessible from nearby. The Crocodile Farm is in the same area of Samut Prakan.
