Golf in Thailand
Thailand has quietly become one of the world's premier golf destinations, with over 250 courses spread across the country and more than 20 championship-quality layouts within 90 minutes of central Bangkok. Green fees that would set you back 200-400 USD in the United States or Europe typically run 1,500-4,000 THB (40-110 USD) here, including caddie fees — making it possible to play world-class golf daily for what you would spend on a single weekend round back home. Courses like Alpine Golf Club, Thai Country Club, and Nikanti Golf Club have hosted professional Asian Tour events and offer conditioning that rivals anything in the region.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Thai golf is the caddie culture. Unlike most countries where caddies are optional or reserved for elite clubs, every golf course in Thailand requires you to use a caddie. These are almost always women, and they are remarkably skilled — carrying your bag, reading greens, suggesting club selections, and providing local course knowledge that can shave strokes off your game. Caddie fees range from 300-500 THB per round, and it is customary to tip an additional 200-400 THB for good service. Many regular visitors develop relationships with their favorite caddies and request them by name for return visits.
The best season for golf in Bangkok runs from November through February, when temperatures hover around 28-32 degrees Celsius with low humidity and virtually no rain. The rainy season from June to October can still offer excellent golf — courses are lush and green, rates drop significantly, and afternoon thunderstorms are usually brief. Several courses are surprisingly accessible by public transport: the Royal Bangkok Sports Club sits right in the Silom district, and courses along the eastern seaboard can be reached via the Bang Na Expressway in under an hour. For serious golf tourists, booking through a local golf tour operator can save 20-30 percent on green fees and includes transport from your hotel, making a week-long golf holiday remarkably affordable.
