Thai SIM Cards & Internet Plans

Compare AIS, DTAC, TrueMove.

Getting connected in Thailand is easy, affordable, and essential. Whether you need a tourist SIM for a short visit or a full postpaid plan for long-term residence, Thailand's three major carriers offer excellent coverage and speeds that often surpass what you would pay in Western countries. Here is everything you need to know about staying connected in Bangkok. ## The Three Major Carriers AIS (Advanced Info Service) is Thailand's largest carrier with the best overall coverage, especially outside Bangkok. Their network reaches remote areas that competitors sometimes miss. True Move H is the second largest and often offers the most aggressive promotions and pricing. True also owns the largest fiber broadband network (True Online), making bundled deals attractive for residents. DTAC has merged with True under the new brand True Corporation, but SIM cards and plans still operate under both brand names during the transition period. For most visitors and residents, AIS or True provide the best experience. ## Tourist SIM Cards Tourist SIMs are available at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports from all three carriers. Prices and plans are clearly displayed at kiosk counters in the arrivals hall. A typical tourist SIM costs 299 baht for 7 days of unlimited data (with speed reduction after 15-30 GB depending on the plan) and includes some call credit. Fifteen-day and 30-day plans are also available at 599 and 899 baht respectively. Bring your passport, as registration is required by law. The entire process takes about 10 minutes. If you miss the airport kiosks, any 7-Eleven sells prepaid SIM cards for 50-99 baht, which you can then top up with data packages. ## Long-Term Prepaid Plans For stays beyond a few weeks, monthly prepaid packages offer better value. AIS and True both offer 30-day unlimited data plans starting at 200-300 baht per month for moderate speeds (4 Mbps) or 400-600 baht for full-speed 5G unlimited data. Top up at any 7-Eleven, Family Mart, or through the carrier's app. You can subscribe to packages by dialing USSD codes or through the carrier app. AIS uses the "my AIS" app, and True uses "True iService." Both apps are available in English. ## Postpaid Plans Residents with a work permit or long-term visa can sign up for postpaid plans, which offer better value for heavy users and include installment plans for new phones. AIS postpaid plans start at 599 baht per month for unlimited 5G data. True offers comparable pricing. Signing up requires your passport, visa, and sometimes a Thai bank account for auto-debit. Visit a carrier's flagship store (AIS Shop, True Shop) rather than a small retailer for the smoothest experience. The Siam Square area has flagship stores for all carriers within walking distance. ## Home Internet For condo residents, fiber broadband is the standard. True Online and AIS Fibre are the main providers. Plans start at 599 baht per month for 200 Mbps and go up to 1,000 baht for gigabit speeds. Installation typically takes 3-5 business days and the technician visit is free. Some condos have exclusive agreements with one provider, so check with your building management before signing up. Most modern condos include basic internet in the common area fees, though speeds may be limited. For the best value, look for promotions that bundle mobile and home internet plans. ## eSIM and International Options If your phone supports eSIM, you can activate a Thai data plan before arriving. AIS and True both offer eSIM for tourists through their websites. International eSIM providers like Airalo and Holafly also offer Thailand plans starting at around 200 baht for 7 days. These are convenient but often more expensive than buying locally. eSIM is ideal for travelers who want to keep their home number active on one SIM slot while using a Thai data plan on the other. ## Practical Tips - Thailand's 5G coverage in central Bangkok is excellent, often delivering 300-700 Mbps on speed tests - WiFi is available at virtually all cafes, restaurants, and shopping malls, though speeds vary - For video calls and remote work, 5G mobile hotspot is a reliable backup when cafe WiFi is slow - Keep your Thai number active by topping up at least once every 30 days, or the number will be recycled - Save your carrier's customer service number: AIS is 1175, True is 1242 Thailand's mobile and internet infrastructure is genuinely impressive, offering speeds and reliability that match or exceed many developed countries at a fraction of the cost. Getting connected is one of the easiest parts of settling into Bangkok life.
