8 Best Skyline Viewpoints

From sky bars to temple tops.

Bangkok's skyline is a dramatic collision of golden temple spires, glass towers, and neon-lit streets stretching to the horizon. Seeing it from above transforms your understanding of the city, revealing how the modern and ancient coexist in ways you cannot appreciate from street level. Here are the best vantage points, from free temple summits to premium sky-high experiences. ## Mahanakhon SkyWalk The King Power Mahanakhon building at BTS Chong Nonsi is Bangkok's most dramatic viewpoint. At 314 meters, the SkyWalk features Thailand's highest observation deck and a glass-floor tray that juts out from the building, letting you look straight down to the street below. The glass floor experience is not for the faint-hearted, but the 360-degree views are extraordinary. Tickets cost 880 baht at the door or around 700 baht if booked online in advance through Klook. The best time to visit is 30 minutes before sunset, so you see the city in daylight, during the golden hour, and after dark when the lights come alive. A rooftop bar on the 78th floor serves cocktails starting at 400 baht. ## Golden Mount (Wat Saket) For a free panoramic view with historical significance, climb the 344 steps to the top of the Golden Mount. This artificial hill crowned by a golden chedi has been a Bangkok landmark since the early 19th century. The climb is gentle, winding through shaded pathways with bells and Buddhist shrines along the way. From the top, you get unobstructed views across the old city, including the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and the Democracy Monument. The temple opens at 7:30 AM and the best time for photography is early morning when the light is soft and the air is clearest. Admission is technically free, though a 50 baht donation is appreciated. ## Rooftop Bars with Views Sky Bar at Lebua State Tower became world-famous after appearing in The Hangover Part II. The bar sits on the 63rd floor and the view down the Chao Phraya River is spectacular, but drinks start at 600 baht and there is a smart dress code requiring long trousers and closed-toe shoes. For better value, try Octave Rooftop Lounge at the Bangkok Marriott Sukhumvit, which has 360-degree views across three levels and happy hour pricing from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Cielo Sky Bar at Sky Hotel Sukhumvit offers similar views with cocktails starting around 300 baht, making it one of the most affordable sky bar experiences. ## Temple Viewpoints Wat Arun's central prang offers views across the river to the Grand Palace from its steep staircase, though the climb is not for those uncomfortable with heights. Admission is 100 baht. The lesser-known Wat Ratchanatdaram has the Loha Prasat, a unique 37-spire metal castle that you can climb for free views over the old city. Wat Prayoon in the Thonburi area has a hilltop chedi with peaceful river views that few tourists discover. ## Observation Decks and Unusual Viewpoints Baiyoke Tower II on Ratchaprarop Road has a revolving observation deck on the 84th floor. At 309 meters, the views rival Mahanakhon at a lower price of 400 baht including a drink. The revolving platform rotates a full 360 degrees in about an hour. For something completely different, the Ferris wheel at Asiatique The Riverfront offers gentle river views for 400 baht per ride, best enjoyed just after sunset. Bangkok rewards those who look up. Whether you spend nothing climbing a centuries-old temple or splurge on cocktails 60 floors above the city, the view always tells the same story: Bangkok is vast, vibrant, and endlessly surprising.
