Bang Na Neighborhood Guide: The Expanding East
Why expats and families are flocking to Bangkok's east side.
Bang Na was farmland not long ago. Today it is one of Bangkok's fastest-growing residential corridors, stretching east from the Chao Phraya end of Sukhumvit toward Samut Prakan. For families and professionals seeking space, value, and a suburban pace of life with urban amenities, Bang Na delivers what central Bangkok cannot β room to breathe at prices that make sense. ## Location and Transport Bang Na sits on Sukhumvit Road's eastern stretch, roughly 10-15 kilometers from central Bangkok. The BTS Sukhumvit Line's extension has been transformative β Bearing station connects the area to the main line, and the extension continues to Samut Prakan. Key stations include Bearing, Samrong, and Pu Chao. From Bearing, it takes about 30 minutes to reach Siam on the BTS. Bangna Expressway connects to Suvarnabhumi Airport in 20-30 minutes without traffic, making it ideal for frequent travelers. Motorway 7 provides access to Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard industrial zone, which is why many expats working in the Eastern Seaboard region choose to live here. Bangkok's new Orange Line MRT and extension plans will further improve connectivity in the coming years. ## Housing and Rent Bang Na offers some of Bangkok's best value for space: - Studio condos: 5,000-8,000 baht per month. Basic but functional, often near BTS Bearing. - One-bedroom condos: 8,000-12,000 baht per month. Many newer buildings with pools and gyms. - Two-bedroom condos: 12,000-18,000 baht per month. Family-sized units in modern buildings. - Houses: 15,000-35,000 baht per month. Actual houses with gardens β something nearly impossible to find at this price in central Bangkok. - Townhouses: 10,000-20,000 baht per month. Popular with young families. Compare this to central Sukhumvit where a one-bedroom starts at 18,000-25,000 baht. In Bang Na, the same money gets you twice the space. Notable condo developments include Ideo Mobi Sukhumvit Eastgate near BTS Bang Na, Knightsbridge Prime Bearing near BTS Bearing, and Lumpini Ville Sukhumvit 76 for budget options. ## Mega Bangna The anchor of the area is Mega Bangna, one of Southeast Asia's largest shopping centers, located on Bangna-Trad Road at kilometer 8. This is not just a mall β it is a lifestyle hub with: - IKEA Thailand's flagship store - HomePro for home improvement - Robinson and Big C department stores - Mega Cineplex with IMAX - Hundreds of restaurants and food courts - Indoor playgrounds and entertainment zones - Free shuttle buses from BTS Udom Suk Mega Bangna is why families love this area β weekend entertainment is sorted within a single complex. ## Central Bangna A large shopping center directly on Bangna-Trad Road with a strong mix of Thai and international brands, a good food court, and cinemas. Less overwhelming than Mega Bangna and closer to the BTS line. Open 10 AM to 10 PM. ## BITEC Bang Na Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre hosts major expos, book fairs, furniture shows, and tech events throughout the year. Located on Bangna-Trad Road near BTS Bang Na. Check the event calendar β many shows offer free entry and are great for finding deals on furniture, electronics, and home goods. ## Food Scene Bang Na's food scene is a mix of suburban mall dining and genuine local finds: - Bangna night food stalls: Along the soi leading to Central Bangna, food carts set up from 5 PM selling grilled meats, som tum, and noodle soups at 40-60 baht. - Soi Lasalle restaurants: This long soi has developed its own restaurant scene with Thai, Japanese, and Korean options. - Mega Bangna food court: Hundreds of options from 40-120 baht. The Japanese food floor has excellent ramen at 150-200 baht. - Sri Anan Restaurant: A local favorite for seafood on Bangna-Trad Road. Grilled prawns, steamed fish, and stir-fries at reasonable prices (150-300 baht per dish). - Coffee shops: The area has embraced specialty coffee β look along Sukhumvit 107 and near Bearing BTS for third-wave cafes. ## International Schools Bang Na's biggest draw for expat families is the concentration of well-regarded international schools: - Bangkok Patana School: One of Thailand's oldest and most prestigious British-curriculum international schools, located on Soi Lasalle. Fees from 500,000-800,000 baht per year. - Berkeley International School: IB and British curriculum on Rama 9 Road nearby. Fees from 300,000-600,000 baht per year. - Anglo Singapore International School: Singapore-style curriculum near Mega Bangna. More affordable at 200,000-400,000 baht per year. - St. Andrews International School Sukhumvit 107: British curriculum with a strong community feel. Fees from 350,000-650,000 baht per year. The presence of these schools creates an English-speaking family community that supports international restaurants, activities, and services in the area. ## Healthcare Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, a large private hospital with English-speaking staff, serves the Bang Na area. Sikarin Hospital is also nearby. For serious medical needs, Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital are 30-40 minutes away by expressway. ## Why Families Choose Bang Na - Houses with gardens at affordable prices - International schools within 10-15 minutes - Mega Bangna for weekend entertainment - Suvarnabhumi Airport access in 20-30 minutes - Safer, quieter streets compared to central Bangkok - Growing community of young families β both Thai and expat - BTS connection to central Bangkok for work ## The Downsides - Traffic on Bangna-Trad Road is severe during rush hours (7-9 AM, 5-8 PM) - Nightlife is essentially nonexistent β you will taxi to Thonglor or Sukhumvit for that - The BTS ride to central Bangkok takes 30-45 minutes - Some areas still feel undeveloped with construction sites - Without a car, getting to Mega Bangna from the BTS requires a shuttle or taxi ## Future Development Bang Na is on an upward trajectory. The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) initiative drives industrial development east of Bangkok, pushing residential demand in Bang Na as a gateway. New condos are launching regularly, and infrastructure continues to improve. Property values have increased 15-25 percent over the past five years, making it an area of interest for investors as well as residents. Bang Na is not glamorous Bangkok. It is practical Bangkok β the Bangkok of families doing school runs, weekend IKEA trips, and barbecues in actual gardens. For many, that is exactly what they need.
