Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram, commonly known as Wat Pho, is Bangkok's oldest and most comprehensive temple complex, serving as both a place of Buddhist worship and a living center of traditional Thai knowledge. While it shares the same grounds as the famous Reclining Buddha temple (see our separate Wat Pho entry), this entry focuses on the Thai traditional massage aspect that has made the temple a UNESCO-recognized center of learning. ## Traditional Thai Massage Heritage Wat Pho is officially recognized as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. King Rama III gathered medical texts and knowledge from across the kingdom and had them inscribed on stone tablets installed throughout the temple, creating what is considered Thailand's first open university. The stone epigraphs include diagrams of pressure points and massage techniques that form the foundation of Thai traditional medicine. These inscriptions are recognized by UNESCO as part of the Memory of the World Register. ## The Massage School The Wat Pho Thai Traditional Medical and Massage School has been operating on the temple grounds since 1955, making it the oldest traditional massage school in Thailand. Visitors can receive a one-hour Thai massage from trained practitioners for very affordable prices. The school also offers multi-day courses in Thai massage, herbal compress massage, foot massage, and aromatherapy for those wanting to learn the art. ## The Stone Inscriptions Scattered throughout the temple complex, 1,440 stone tablets document traditional Thai medicine, including herbal remedies, massage techniques, and human anatomy as understood in traditional Thai medical practice. Medical diagrams show the body's energy lines (sen) and pressure points. These extraordinary documents represent centuries of accumulated healing knowledge preserved in stone. ## Best Time to Visit Afternoon is ideal for combining temple exploration with a massage appointment. The massage pavilion can have long waits during peak hours (10:00-14:00), so consider arriving early or late in the afternoon. Massage prices are posted and fixed — no bargaining necessary. ## How to Get There MRT Sanam Chai station (exit 1), 5-minute walk. Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Tien pier. The temple is south of the Grand Palace. ## Nearby Attractions The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew are immediately north. Wat Arun is across the river via the Tha Tien ferry. The Museum of Siam is 5 minutes on foot. Pak Khlong Talat flower market is nearby.
