Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen
Famous for psychedelic glass ceiling painting and 69-meter seated Buddha.
Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen has become one of Bangkok's most viral Instagram destinations thanks to its stunning emerald-green glass ceiling painting depicting a cosmic bodhi tree against a galaxy of stars. This working temple, which also boasts a massive 69-meter seated Buddha visible from across the district, offers a genuinely awe-inspiring experience that combines traditional Buddhist devotion with breathtaking modern artistry. ## The Glass Ceiling Painting The temple's most famous feature is on the top floor of a large white pagoda on the grounds. Inside, you will find a mesmerizing ceiling installation — a green glass bodhi tree surrounded by swirling galaxies, stars, and celestial imagery that creates an almost psychedelic effect. The room is dimly lit to enhance the luminous quality of the artwork, and visitors often spend 20-30 minutes simply lying on the floor gazing upward. The lower floors of the pagoda house Buddhist relics, meditation rooms, and a museum of temple artifacts. ## The Giant Buddha Completed in 2021, the 69-meter seated Buddha image dominates the skyline of western Bangkok. Covered in copper and gold, the massive figure can be seen from the BTS Skytrain and from many surrounding neighborhoods. An observation platform at the base offers views of the temple grounds and the surrounding district. The scale is genuinely staggering when viewed up close. ## The Temple Grounds Wat Paknam is a major functioning temple with an active monastic community. The grounds include multiple prayer halls, a canal-side meditation area, and a school. Luang Pu Sodh Candasaro, a famous Thai meditation master, served as abbot here and the temple remains an important center for the Dhammakaya meditation tradition. Visitors should dress respectfully and behave quietly. ## Best Time to Visit Weekday mornings from 9:00 to 11:00 offer the most peaceful experience of the glass ceiling room with minimal crowds. The pagoda can get busy on weekends. Late afternoon light creates beautiful photographs of the giant Buddha against the sky. ## How to Get There The easiest route is BTS Wutthakat station or BTS Talat Phlu station, then a short taxi or motorcycle taxi ride. Alternatively, take the MRT Blue Line to Bang Phai station and walk about 10 minutes. The temple is on the Thonburi side of the river. ## Nearby Attractions The Thonburi canal network offers boat trips through traditional neighborhoods. Wat Arun is accessible via river transportation. The Artist's House (Baan Silapin) along Khlong Bangkok Noi presents traditional Thai puppet shows. Kudi Chin multicultural community is reachable by boat.
