Nang Loeng
One of Bangkok's oldest communities, known for traditional Thai desserts and old-school charm.
Nang Loeng is one of Bangkok's oldest surviving neighborhoods, a pocket of old-world charm where traditional Thai dessert shops, a century-old market, and a tight-knit community preserve ways of life that have nearly vanished from the rest of the city. Located in the Dusit district near the former royal palaces, this unassuming neighborhood rewards curious visitors with authentic cultural experiences far from the tourist trail. ## Nang Loeng Market The centerpiece is Nang Loeng Market, established during the reign of King Rama V and considered one of Bangkok's oldest surviving fresh markets. The market's covered corridors are lined with food vendors who have operated from the same stalls for generations. The food here is distinctly old-school Bangkok — dishes and desserts that have disappeared from most other parts of the city are still prepared daily using traditional recipes and methods. ## Thai Desserts Nang Loeng is revered as one of the last places in Bangkok where traditional Thai desserts (khanom Thai) are made by hand using ancestral recipes. These delicate confections — including khanom chan (layered jelly), khanom sai sai (palm sugar in banana leaf), and thong yip (golden pinched dumplings) — require extraordinary skill and patience. Watching the makers work is as fascinating as tasting the results. ## Heritage Architecture The neighborhood preserves shophouses and wooden buildings from the early 20th century. A former cinema, traditional apothecary shops, and aged wooden houses line the quiet lanes. The area was home to Thai performing arts communities, and remnants of this heritage survive in occasional cultural events and the neighborhood's artistic spirit. ## Best Time to Visit Morning from 8:00 to 11:00 when the market is most active and the full range of food and desserts is available. Many vendors sell out by early afternoon. The area is also included in some heritage walking tours organized by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. ## How to Get There Take a taxi or tuk-tuk from BTS Victory Monument or MRT Ratchadamnoen. The neighborhood is not well-served by public transit, which has helped preserve its character. It is about a 15-minute walk from the Golden Mount. ## Nearby Attractions Wat Benchamabophit (Marble Temple) is in the same Dusit district. Dusit Palace grounds are nearby. The Golden Mount is about a 15-minute walk. Democracy Monument and Ratchadamnoen Avenue connect via a pleasant walk south.
