    Old Town (Rattanakosin)

    Where Bangkok's Royal History Lives

    Historic & Cultural
    8,000–20,000 ฿/mo
    Safety: Medium
    MRT ✓

    Overview

Rattanakosin Island is where Bangkok was born. This is the historic heart, home to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and the National Museum. The streets are narrow and atmospheric, filled with old shophouses, traditional markets, and the ghosts of 240 years of Thai royal history. It's not convenient for daily commuting, but it's magical for soaking in authentic Bangkok culture.

    Best For

    History buffs & culture lovers
    Backpackers (Khao San Road)
    Photographers

    Food Scene

Traditional Thai cuisine at its finest. Pad Thai Thip Samai is legendary. Iced Thai tea vendors, boat noodles near Khao San, and old-school Chinese-Thai restaurants. Khao San Road has international backpacker food.

    Nightlife

Khao San Road is the famous backpacker party street with buckets, live music, and international crowds. Beyond Khao San, the area is quite quiet at night — more about temple-lit ambiance.

    Getting Around

MRT Sanam Chai station (nearest to Grand Palace area). Chao Phraya Express Boats stop at multiple piers. Public buses are frequent. No BTS access — taxis and tuk-tuks are common. Walking is the best way to explore.
